(d)instances is a computational musical instrument to be played collaboratively by two persons that control the production of sound by acting gestures and body movements in relation to each other.
A Machine Learning algorithm analyses the scene through the lens of a camera and detects the body poses of the participants. The measure of the distance between the bodies and specific body parts (such as the noses and the hips of the two players) is used to control the parameters of the software synthesiser.
The empty space becomes an immaterial interface that allows the playing of music through non- predefined (nor disciplined) gestures. As (d)instances has been ideated as an instrument to be set up as an art installation, the public articulates performances that engage the intimacy of the body in relationship with social behaviours and technology.Â
