Samuele Albani: Creative Technologist

“Ocular Choreography” is a research project that explores the potential impact of emerging technologies on our psychological health. The project takes the form of a participatory workshop, ideated by artist Liz Magic Laser, in a dialogue with the EMDR therapist Dr. Ameet Aggarwal, and the face tracking expert Dan Hill Ph.D., author of “Emotionomics”

As a creative technologist and full-stack software developer, I collaborated with the artist Liz Magic Laser, the Tate’s curator Annie Bicknell, the assistant curator Elliot Gibbons, and Dr. Rachel Falconer from the Computing Department of Goldsmiths University of London to design and develop the software backing the online event.

The software uses the Visage Technologies Machine Learning model to allow participants to interact with the face and eye tracking, as well as its emotions’ prediction processes. Additionally, I configured a networking system through WebSocket and WebRTC protocols to connect the remote Linux Server with the participants’ clients.

During the event, another web page streamed live, receiving the face tracking data of every participant, and redrawing the information in a new form of data-driven video conference. Finally, a database collects the data in complete respect of the users’ privacy and anonymity.
